Art Speak Youth Internship
Art Speak is a multi-disciplinary youth engagement and job preparedness program featuring a dynamic learning environment, real world museum experience, and arts education practice. Art Speak offers training and stipends to three San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) youth in grades 10–12. Interns learn art production and multimedia skills, produce hands-on activities and content for family and public programs and the museum’s Education Resource Room, and create awareness of the museum’s programs through outreach to their peers. Interns are introduced to other museum departments and staff to learn about museum operations and careers, and develop their presentation and public speaking skills through interaction with the general public and schools and community groups.
The Art Speak internship is a paid, part-time nine month internship that runs from January 6–September 30, 2012. Interns are on-site weekends and some weekdays, and are expected to commit to up to six hours each week.
Intern Responsibilities
- Assisting with public programs
- Developing and implementing activities appealing to teens for existing programs, such as Mochi Pounding, Lunar New Year, Cultural Celebrations, and Family Festivals
- Creating content that is relevant to youth and transmitted in forms youth relate to and are familiar with, such as manga, video, audio, and music
- Meeting with museum staff to learn about museum operations and career options
- Outreaching to schools and community groups to create awareness about the museum, its programs, and youth admission policy
Application Requirements
- SFUSD high school student in grades 10, 11, or 12
- Must have an interest in art making, Asian culture, arts education, museums, public speaking, and customer service
- Reliable, responsible, prompt, self-motivated, independent, friendly, enthusiastic, works well as part of a team, comfortable interacting with the public and speaking to large groups
- Can commit to being on-site up to six hours a week
Compensation and Benefits
Art Speak interns are paid California minimum wage for all hours worked each week. Additional benefits include:

To apply, please complete this application form and answer the questions on a separate page. The application must be accompanied by one letter of recommendation from a teacher or another adult who is not a family member—this could be a mentor, supervisor, family friend, etc.
