I'll definitely check it out! What you wrote reminded me of <i>City of Life and Death</i> (about the Nanking Massacre), which I recently saw at the SFIAAFF. There's a young boy in that film who offers a similar example of the resiliency of life when confronted by war. Somehow, I’ve never read or seen Empire of the Sun. I’ll definitely check it out!
