We're Golden

In 2016, we’re celebrating 50 years of sharing Asia’s diverse cultures through one of the world’s finest collections of Asian art.

The Asian Art Museum opened in 1966, just before the Beatles’ final concert in Candlestick Park, when the Summer of Love was on the horizon and construction was starting on a revolutionary transit system called BART. Sound like the distant past? Here’s some perspective: The museum is home to an awe-inspiring 6,000 years of art and culture. Our constantly growing collection of over 18,000 paintings, sculptures, textiles, ceramics and more tell the stories of the world’s most populous continent. In our galleries, you’ll find art from Turkey to Thailand — including intricate painted screens and colorful puppets, ancient gilded Buddhas and cutting-edge contemporary works — that inspire connections across time and place.

With the increasing influence of Asia both locally and on the global stage, the museum’s role of fostering exchange and understanding has never been more important. Take this golden opportunity to visit one of San Francisco’s premier cultural institutions as we celebrate our past and look toward the future. While our commitment to presenting world-class art will never change, we’ll keep surprising you — just like the city itself.

Let's make more history together. Be a part of the festivities — you can start by voting for your favorite artwork or telling us about a special museum moment
