The Asian Art Museum hosts the kick-off event of Stanford University’s symposium series on Art, Social Space and Public Discourse in Iran. Held on Friday, Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5, the symposium includes lectures, panels and public exhibitions of works and interventions around the city. The symposium will offer a unique glimpse into Iran's contemporary art and visual culture through the investigation of public art practices and cultural expression in present-day Iran. The program will explore contemporary Iranian street art and public practices as well as older traditions of artistic engagement in public space, such as Parde-khani and Ta'zieh.

The opening event at the museum on Thursday, Nov. 3, introduces topics covered in the symposium and examines the history and development of coffeehouse painting and culture in Iran. Throughout the evening, we will explore the differences in style and context of coffeehouse painting from traditional miniature painting and follow its progression into contemporary artistic practices. Following the talk will be a special performance, Live Broadcast from Tomorrow, a live-stream from a coffeehouse in Tehran’s Darvaze Ghar district in which magnificent large-scale coffeehouse paintings will be the backdrop for a naqqali (oral storytelling) performance from the “Shahnameh” (“The Book of Kings”).  In this unprecedented interactive experience, Samsung Hall at the Asian Art Museum will be transformed to include coffeehouse aesthetics, providing a space for guests to sit back and enjoy a traditional coffeehouse experience in Iran.
