Dressed to Kill: 19th Century Japanese Sword Fittings
presented by Dr. Robert Mintz, Deputy Director, Arts & Programs

Japan’s sword culture of the Edo and Meiji periods has fascinated art collectors for centuries. The fittings, or furniture, used to mount and ‘attire’ Japanese swords offer richly decorated surfaces adorned with a host of interesting and beautiful designs. The craftsmanship of these small metal pieces made them objects of great desirability; collected by museums across the world, the Asian Art Museum possess a particularly special collection of these masterfully created works. In Dr. Mintz’s presentation, you will discover the techniques used to create 19th century Japanese sword fittings and consider the meanings behind the decorations found on their surfaces.
