The Asian Art Museum is
honored to present the US premier of the documentary film about one of the most
highly regarded experts in Chinese painting and calligraphy connoisseurship Dr.
Fu Shen. Fu is one of the last traditional connoisseurs living today, whose
historical scholarship coupled with an expert command and practice of Chinese
painting and calligraphy made him equally a scholar, collector, connoisseur,
educator, and artist.
The film features interviews
with Fu, who will celebrate his 80th birthday this year and will be present at
this screening, as well as with notable scholars of Chinese art including, Jay
Xu, Asian Art Museum; Mimi Gardner Gates, Dunhuang Foundation; Mike Hearn,
Metropolitan Museum of Art; Kungshin Chou, Former Director, National Palace
Museum in Taiwan; Jan Stuart, Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler
Gallery; Richard Barnhart, Yale University; Lothar Ledderose, University of
Heidelberg; Qianshen Bai, Boston University and Marilyn Wong Gleysteen, among
A selection Dr. Fu’s
painting and calligraphy works from his 60-year career, Traces of the Past
and Future: A Retrospective of Fu Shen’s Painting and Calligraphy, will be
on view in the Chinese painting galleries of the Asian Art Museum from December
5, 2017 to August 4, 2018.
