  • Social Basket Case

Workshops & Activities, For Families, and part of Art/Lit Living Innovation Zone: Program Activations

    Jan 06

    11 AM—3 PM

Village Artist Corner (at the corner of Larkin and Fulton Streets)

Social Basket Case is a social sculpture that taps into our hopes, dreams, fears and goals through an interactive, collective “dream-weaving” experience.
Every first Sunday from November through January, weave your feelings into a collective sculpture and show that they are common threads shared with those around you. Each Sunday will offer an additional dimension of expression, such as wind chimes in December and a performance in January as the finale. Village Artist-in-Resident Elizabeth Marley believes that creating social connection in the public realm activates one’s own hopes, dreams, fears and goals, and can shed light on shared concerns.

In the March 1919 edition of New York's "Syracuse Herald," the newspaper defined a basket case as a soldier who had lost both arms and legs and therefore had to be carried in a basket. Since then, the term has come to describe someone with a mental disability or a person regarded as useless or unable to cope. Marley believes that revealing our personal or collective weaknesses in the context of Social Basket Case can serve as a reminder that underneath we are all quite similar.

The Village Artist Corner is funded through the generosity of The Family of Tania Vonelleese Seymour and San Francisco Grants for the Arts. Founding program support was made possible by Housing-Related Parks Program from the State of California, facilitated by San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department; The Hearst Foundations; California Arts Council; and The NFL Foundation and 50 Fund, the legacy fund of the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee. Support for community engagement at the Asian Art Museum is provided by The Walter & Elise Haas Fund.
