Shanay Jhaveri, assistant curator of South Asian modern and contemporary art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
, New York, provides an overview of The Met’s recent South Asian acquisitions and exhibitions while bringing into focus some of the larger intellectual issues and practical challenges around curating and collecting in the 21st century. Jhaveri’s lecture will be followed by a discussion with Marc Mayer, assistant curator of contemporary art at the Asian Art Museum, and a presentation by Abby Chen, head of contemporary art and senior associate curator, on the museum’s current transformation project.
Shanay Jhaveri has been assistant curator, South Asian, modern and contemporary art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, since 2016. He is a graduate of Brown University and holds a Ph.D. from the Royal College of Art, London. His books include “Western Artists and India: Creative Inspirations in Art and Design” and “Outsider Films on India: 1950–1990” and he is a contributing editor at Frieze magazine. At The Met, Jhaveri has organized the 2018 roof commission, Huma Bhabha: We Come in Peace; Ranjani Shettar: Seven ponds and a few raindrops; and the retrospective Phenomenal Nature: Mrinalini Mukherjee.
