Memories to Light
Evenings, Film & Video
Free with museum admission
Earlier this year the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) inaugurated a home-movie archiving and digitizing initiative called Memories to Light. The project explores the rich artistic and cultural possibilities of amateur film by individuals from communities historically underrepresented in mainstream media. For this event, CAAM executive director and film historian Stephen Gong presents a selection of home movies from the many highlights in CAAM’s collection.
The night includes a performance by La Femme Deadly Venoms performing a set of new music and then as they will live-score an original soundtrack to a selection from the Memories to Light archive. Expect to see lost landscapes of San Francisco and rituals of family gatherings both touching and surprising. The program also features a reprise performance and screening of local filmmaker Mark Decena’s The War Inside, a remarkable and intimate reflection on his family’s home movies. For this night only, StoryCorps will take up residence in the museum recording your stories.
Grab a drink with, listen to tunes by DJ Deeandroid and Lady Fingaz (members of LFDV), and take in some home movies and performance. Tonight’s program serves as the culmination of Asian Contemporary Art Week, in collaboration with the Asian Contemporary Art Consortium.
