  • Lunar New Year Celebration: The Year of the Monkey

Workshops & Activities, For Families, Performances, and part of Lunar New Year Celebration

    Jan 31

    Free with museum admission

    10:30 AM—4 PM

Roll in the Year of the Monkey with talented dancers and musicians at the Asian Art Museum’s annual Lunar New Year Celebration. Students from the Chinese American International School and China Dance School and Theatre present traditional and modern music, as well as dances from China to kick off the Lunar New Year. Join in with a playful student-arranged version of the lion dance, which is believed to scare away evil spirits and ensure a bright beginning to the year. After the performances, enjoy author Oliver Chin’s story about Chinese zodiac animals’ characteristics and discover something new about yourself. To round out the day’s activities, have your name written in Chinese calligraphy and make a Lunar New Year inspired art project developed and led by the museum’s Art Speak teen interns.

The Lunar New Year holiday begins on the first day of the first new moon; in 2016, this falls on Feb. 8. The beginning of the Lunar New Year is very important in China as well as other East and Southeast Asian countries. It is believed that unresolved matters are taken with you into the New Year, so it is wise to clean your house, pay off all debts, and tie up any loose ends as you welcome the Year of the Monkey.   This program is presented in partnership with the Bay Area Asian Deaf Association, BAADA.
