Filipino American International Book Festival at the Asian Art Museum

Join us as we honor Filipino and Filipino American authors and artists in this free Sunday at the museum featuring talks, food, artist demonstrations, and music.

Acclaimed Filipino National Artist Ben Cabrera talks about creativity and his efforts to capture the nuances of everyday life in his work.

Take note of major events and important players in Filipino American history in a lively panel discussion moderated by KTVU’s Lloyd LaCuesta, and featuring speakers Catherine Ceniza Choy (Assoc. Prof. Ethnic Studies, UC Berkeley), Penelope Flores (Prof. of Education Emeritus, SFSU), Mel Orpilla (Filipino American National Historical Society), Oscar Peñaranda (writer and Prof. of Asian American Studies, SFSU), James Sobredo (Assoc. Prof. Asian American Studies, Cal State, Sacramento), and Carlos Zialcita (musician and founder of San Francisco Filipino American Jazz Festival).

Popular historian and cultural activist Felice Santa Maria will share vignettes about the Philippines’ culinary traditions, from sourcing and production to the consumption of different Filipino foods. Sample dishes designed by Santa Maria, and enjoy a display of antique food implements and cooking utensils from the Cordillera Mountain Tribes from Therese Finnegan Private Collection.

Enjoy rondalla players throughout the day,check out the West Bay youth’s photos and social media presentation on Healthy Lifestyles, take a docent or storyteller led tour of the Filipino objects in the museum,or drop in on a Baybayin (Filipino calligraphy) demonstration by Christine Balza.

This program is part of the two-day Filipino American International Book Festival, Saturday and Sunday, October 1-2, held in a special stage erected on Fulton Street in the Civic Center and with events at the San Francisco Public Library and the Asian Art Museum.
