China
Ancient China ($25.00)
This introductory packet highlights ancient Chinese jades, bronzes, and ceramics from the museum’s permanent collection. Includes background summaries of the main historical dynasties; brief sections on jade, ceramic, and bronze production; and activities for the classroom.
Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology ($25.00)
Use this packet for a basic introduction to Chinese archaeology. Includes highlights from The Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology, a blockbuster special exhibition featuring recent archaeological finds that have changed historical theories about the development of China. This special-edition slide packet was produced in conjunction with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
Ancient China: The Legacy of Confucius and Laozi ($25.00)
Study the philosophical teachings of two great sages, Confucius and Laozi. Learn how the ancient philosophies of Confucianism and Taoism influenced government, education, family life, and the arts. Features objects from the popular special exhibition Taoism and the Arts of China.

This packet introduces various deities (and forms of those deities) worshiped in India, including Buddha, Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesha, and more.
Warrior Kings and Divine Jesters: Indonesian Rod Puppets ($25.00)
This packet is designed to give educators and students an introduction to the world of Indonesian three-dimensional rod puppet theater (wayang golek) and to the stories told in performances using these puppets.
Bushido: Code of the Samurai ($20.00)
This packet provides an introduction to samurai culture through a look at the life of a Japanese warrior during the Edo period.
Arts of Edo Japan ($20.00)
This packet offers a more in-depth examination of Edo period (1615–1868) Japan, focusing on the flourishing arts of the period, which are richly represented in the Asian Art Museum collection. Includes ceramics as well as paintings on screens, fans, handscrolls, and hanging scrolls. Art activities include creating a 3-D model of a teahouse and creating a pilgrimage book and seals. Pair this packet with the woodblock print packet Hokusai and Hiroshige (see below) for an expanded unit on early modern Japan.
Hokusai and Hiroshige (for loan only)
This packet features the woodblock prints of these two famous Japanese woodblock artists. Provides an overview of the Edo period, during which woodblock prints became popular among the common people and a new genre of landscape prints developed in Japan. Focuses on famous places in Japan and on aspects of Edo-period society depicted in the prints.
Goryeo Dynasty: Korea’s Age of Enlightenment ($20.00 for 11 slides)
This introduction to the arts of the Goryeo Dynasty includes rare celadon ceramics, Buddhist paintings and sculptures, illustrated sacred manuscripts (sutras), and ritual implements.
The Sacred Arts of Tibet ($25.00)
This overview of the culture, history, and arts of Tibet features contextual slides along with a selection of objects from the Asian Art Museum’s permanent collection. Provides a background for the study of traditional Tibetan arts and brings students up to date on contemporary Tibet.
Islam and the Arts of the Ottoman Empire ($25.00)
Using objects from the traveling exhibition Empire of the Sultans: Ottoman Art from the Khalili Collection, this packet explains the basics of Islam and Islamic art within the context of that place and time. Includes summaries of the beliefs of Islam and information on the Koran, Islamic calligraphy, and mosques.

A Walk through the Chinese Galleries ($15.00)
This thirty-minute video tour of the museum’s permanent collection highlights ceramics, jades, bronzes, paintings, and Buddhist arts representing some six thousand years of Chinese culture and tradition.
Draping the Sari (for loan only)
Learn to drape this traditional women’s garment! This five-minute video introduces two different styles of sari draping, one from southern and the other from northern India. A perfect activity for students, requiring only a three-yard length of any colorful fabric.
Beliefs Made Visible ($15.00)
Members of the Bay Area Indian community describe the context of Hindu and Buddhist arts in India. Included are clips of temples, festivals, and worship at various sites in India. Appropriate for middle-school classes.
Hokusai and Hiroshige: Japanese Woodblock Prints from the James A. Michener Collection, Honolulu Academy of Arts ($10.00)
This twelve-minute video highlights an important collection of nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock prints by these two celebrated artists. The prints depict themes of landscape, travel, and daily life. Brief descriptions of the artists’ lives also included.
