Your contribution of time and talent as a volunteer supports and enriches our visitors’ experience of the Asian Art Museum. Most volunteers help either in the Museum Store or with Visitor Services (information desk and coat check). Anyone who is interested is encouraged to apply. No previous experience is required, and training is provided. We accept new applications on a rolling basis.
Visitor Services
You'll answer visitors’ questions about where things are located within the museum and the surrounding neighborhood, and what's happening in the museum as well as working in coat check. Some standing is required.
The Museum Store
You'll help customers with questions about our merchandise which reflects all the art from the collections; you'll also work the computerized cash register. The ability to stand for periods of time is required.
What's Involved
When you become a volunteer, you’ll be given an orientation to the museum as well as training for the area(s) in which you volunteer. To be an active volunteer, we expect you to do two 4-hour shifts per month and to make at least a year-long commitment.
We offer volunteer shifts which accommodate volunteers who are available primarily on weekdays as well as those who work full-time. Volunteer shifts are:
Tuesday through Sunday: 9:45 am–1:45 pm and 1:30–5:30 pm
Every Thursday evening: 5:15–9:15 pm
The museum is closed on Mondays
The benefits of being an active volunteer include a 20% discount in our Museum Store and on museum membership (must be a volunteer at the time of purchase or renewal) as well as a 10% discount in the museum café.
Please download, print, and fill out the volunteer application. To get further information, please contact: prampe@asianart.org, or call 415.581.3725.
If you are interested in learning more about our architectural guide, docent, or storyteller programs, please contact: volunteer@asianart.org. Docents are required to do a three-year course of study and new classes are formed every five or six years. Architectural guide training and storyteller training occur periodically based on need.
