Japan's First Embassy

Short Talks by Keio University Students

On the occasion of the special exhibit Japan's Early Ambassadors to San Francisco, 1860-1927, students from Keio University in Tokyo will present short talks on the historic first embassy from Japan to the US. The ambassadors enjoyed a memorable visit around San Francisco on their way to meet President Buchanan in Washington, DC. The students will talk in particular about the famous founder of their university, Fukuzawa Yukichi (1835-1901), whose portrait is on the 10,000 yen note, and who is regarded in Japan as one of the founders of modern Japan.

Zen Calligraphy Lecture and Demonstration

Shodo Harada Roshi, the abbot of Sogenji, a beautiful 17th century monastery in Okayama in Japan and international teacher of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, demonstrates his large scale calligraphy works. Harada Roshi, speaking through his teaching partner and translator Daichi Priscilla Storandt, also explains the meaning of the poetic and insightful words. Program introduced by Buddhism teacher Yvonne Rand.

Harada RoshiShodo Harada Roshi

Shodo Harada Roshi was a student of the scholar and Zen Master Yamada Mumon Roshi (1900-1988), one of the great leaders of the Renzi Buddhist sect.  In the past 20 years Harada Roshi has trained men and women from Germany, Spain, France, Switzerland, Briton, the U.S., Australia, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Iran, Greece, Sweden, India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Vietnam and Japan. His students include people from all walks of life; from exploring youths to eminent professionals.

 

Daichi, Harada Roshi’s translator, is also his facilitator and teaching partner. A New Yorker, she set out on a 3 month trip to Japan for an apprenticeship in Bizen pottery. While there she met Mumon Roshi and 38 years later she still lives in Japan.

Christianity in Philippine Art

Dr. Corazon Alvina, former director of the National Museum of the Philippines, and Rene Javellana, SJ, Professor of Art, Ateneo de Manila University speak about art and Christianity from a historical perspective. They also explore some of the artworks presented in the exhibition at The University of San Francisco called Galleons and Globalization: California Mission Arts and the Pacific Rim (on view August 20- December 19, 2010).

Docent Lectures

Our trained docents in the Community Speakers Program (CSP) offer informal, illustrated talks on current exhibitions and special themes. For a modest fee, these talks can also be taken to your community group or office. For a list of lecture topics and to request a talk please call the Asian Art Museum at 415-581-3664 or email docent@asianart.org.

Docent slide talks in the museum occur on the fourth Sunday of every month at 2:30 pm in the Education Studios. Note: No slide talk in December.
