Lectures

Lecture: Contemporary Korean Fiber Arts
Thursday, June 19
6:00 pm–7:30 pm

Free with museum admission ($5 after 5pm)


Four artists--Oh Soonhee, Lee Chunghie, Kim Jeeun, and Kwon Hyuk--introduce the dynamic world of contemporary Korean fiber arts, the focus of the museum's Korean gallery installation on view through November. The speakers will discuss their work in the context of contemporary Korean fiber arts and the traditional Korean arts of wrapping cloths (bojagi) and handmade paper (hanji).

Meet all six artists featured in the exhibition and return for AsiaAlive on Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21, when two of the artists will discuss and demonstrate aspects of their process. Information: www.asianart.org/asiaalive.htm

Docent Lectures

Our trained docents in the Community Speakers Program (CSP) offer informal, illustrated talks on current exhibitions and special themes. For a modest fee, these talks can also be taken to your community group or office. For a list of lecture topics and to request a talk please call the Asian Art Museum at 415-581-3664 or email docent@asianart.org.

Docent slide talks in the museum occur on the fourth Sunday of every month at 2:30 pm in the Education Studios. Note: No slide talk in December.

Workshops and classes

Chinese Brushpainting Class with Aiqin Zhou

Saturdays, July 12 through August 16

10:30 am – 1:30 pm

Education studio

$150.00 for museum members, $210.00 for general (includes museum admission)  

Learn basic vocabulary of brushstrokes and techniques for painting traditional Chinese landscapes with artist Aiqin Zhou. Participants learn watercolor methods and processes and create artworks using natural hair brush and mulberry paper which culminate with an exhibition in the last session of class.

Chinese Calligraphy Class with Aiqin Zhou

Saturday and Sunday, August 23 and 24

10:30 am – 2:30 pm

Education studio

$80.00 for museum members, $104.00 for general (includes museum admission) 

Chinese painter and calligrapher Aiqin Zhou teaches the basic styles and techniques of Chinese calligraphy, including the proper selection and use of equipment, body and hand posture, character strokes and proportions.
