The museum, together with its affiliate the Society for Asian Art, offers a variety of lectures, classes and workshops that enable you to delve deeper into Asian art and culture.

The Hosokawa Collection: Cultural Arts and Military Arts

Welcome remarks by Jay Xu (Director, Asian Art Museum) and Yoko Woodson (Curator of Japanese Art, Asian Art Museum).

Invited speakers include Takeuchi Jun’ichi* (Director, Eisei-Bunko Museum) on Bun and Bu in the Hosokawa Collection, Joseph Sorensen (UC Berkeley) on Hosokawa Yūsai and Poetic Tradition, Andrew Watsky (Princeton University) on Picturing Yûsai: Portrait of an Embodied Poet,, Susan Matisoff (UC Berkeley) on Why Would a Daimyo Care About Noh?, Christy Bartlett (Urasenke Foundation, San Francisco) on Tea and the Hosokawa Family,, Ellen Conant (Independent scholar) on  Preserving the Past, Patronizing the Present: Hosokawa Moritatsu and the Eisei-Bunko, and Bruce Coats (Scripps College) on Castles and Moats.

Sessions will be moderated by Gregory Levine (UC Berkeley), Melissa Rinne (Asian Art Museum), and Deborah Clearwaters (Asian Art Museum). Closing remarks by Susan McCabe (President, Society for Asian Art).

Ceramics and the Japanese People

Ceramist, sculptor, painter, and calligrapher Abe Anjin discusses his traditional Bizen-style ceramics (Japan’s oldest-known pottery, originating in the southern city of Bizen) as well as his philosophy on Japanese ceramics in general. Born in 1938 in Osaka, Abe is one of a few ceramists in Japan who has researched kilns, clay, and processes of Bizenware for many years. His works are in the collections of many museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art.

 

 
   

Raising Spirits

Raising Spirits is dynamic fusion of art, food and wine produced by author, art history lecturer and sake aficionado Kirsten Shilakes. Join us in this 90-minute, upbeat, multimedia and multi-sensory exploration of the museum’s collection through vivid tales of art and wine carefully synchronized with the artworks. Sake sommelier and manager of True Sake, Miwa Wong will introduce and evaluate four premium sakes for you to try. You’ll leave Raising Spirits an art and sake aficionado!

Docent Lectures

Our trained docents in the Community Speakers Program (CSP) offer informal, illustrated talks on current exhibitions and special themes. For a modest fee, these talks can also be taken to your community group or office. For a list of lecture topics and to request a talk please call the Asian Art Museum at 415-581-3664 or email docent@asianart.org.

Docent slide talks in the museum occur on the fourth Sunday of every month at 2:30 pm in the Education Studios. Note: No slide talk in December.

Zen Painting Workshop for Youth and a Parent/Guardian

Saturday, August 22

Using sumi ink and brush create creatures real and imagined. Add facial features and expressions, make your painting come alive. Paint separately or work together as a team to create fantastical critters of all kinds. Kyoto-based artist Michael Hofmann teaches this workshop for youth aged 8 to 12 and their guardians. Children may attend with or without an adult.

 

Brushpainting Workshop: Zen Painting with Michael Hofmann

Following the tradition of free, effortless, natural Zen paintings, learn to paint with ink and brush, spontaneously creating works of art with deep thoughts and quick artistic impulses. Some of the workshop exercises may be based on the paintings from Lords of the Samurai. Originally from the Bay Area, Michael Hofmann has spent most of the last 35 years as a painter based in Kyoto, where his studies were guided by the master sumi-e painter and Zen priest Jikihara Gyokusei. Hofmann has had solo exhibitions of his work in galleries and museums throughout Japan. This workshop is for beginning and intermediate painters.
