Featured Artwork
Sake bottle and food box set (sageju) in the shape of an eggplant (4 parts)
By Hosokawa Sansai (aka Tadaoki, 1563-1646)
Lacquered wood; Japan, Edo period (1615-1868);
Eisei-Bunko Museum
Featured in Lords of the Samurai, this picnic set combines an eggplant-shaped sake flask, a food container, and a sake cup in the shape of an eggplant leaf, attached to the bottle stopper. Warriors were expected to be highly cultured men, but the ability to craete such a complex and charmingly proportioned piece as this was very unusual. It would have required great patience and talent—which appear to have come naturally to the brilliant warrior Hosokawa Sansai.
