Balinese Jazz Guitar
Regarded as one of the fastest guitarist
in Indonesia, I Wayan Balawan will appear in a special concert
performing his signature blend of traditional Balinese music with jazz.
In 1993, he was awarded a scholarship to study jazz at the Australian
Institute of Music in Sydney and in 1997, returned to Bali and formed a
band called Batuan Ethnic Fusion.
Well-known for his ability to
play a double-neck guitar and his development of the touch-tapping
technique, Balawan has released three albums and tours all over the
world.
See critically acclaimed Bali (recently reviewed in the
New York Times), mingle over cocktails, embark on a docent tour, stroll
the galleries, and drop in on casual interactive 30-minute gamelan
workshops with Gamelan Kori Mas, who'll demonstrate traditional
interlocking techniques, melodic structure, and dynamics of the gamelan
ensemble. They'll discuss the varied roles that gamelan music ensembles
hold in Balinese culture, and invite the audience to experience to
Bali's ethos of balance, harmony, and interdependence for themselves by
trying their hand at an instrument!
