Great minds think differently — join us for the new series TAKEOVER and see the world through the eyes of a visionary. For our first one-night-only event, filmmaker H.P. Mendoza literally takes over the museum to share the ideas and influences behind his music and movies. Best known for his celebrated micro-budget film “Colma: The Musical,” Mendoza’s work has explored themes of identity, nostalgia, gentrification and even torture policy. On Mar. 17, his fascination with musicals, horror films, 8-bit games and animation will be mashed together in an epic party.

Watch, listen and dance to live chiptune music by Mendoza as Samsung Hall gets transformed into MISSION ARCADE. Put on a pair of 3D glasses and immerse yourself in Mendoza’s surprising worlds in the ANAGLYPH LOUNGE. And participate in SUPER MUSEUM HUNT, a museum-wide alternate reality 8-bit game challenging you to solve a puzzle with other guests using your smartphone. Be enthralled by a museum experience that defies tradition.

Future TAKEOVERs will be helmed by chef Anthony Myint and writer Karen Leibowitz, founders of revolutionary restaurants Mission Chinese Food and The Perennial; and writer, performance artist and comedian Kristina Wong, who explores and explodes racial stereotypes.
This event is co-organized by the Center for Asian American Media as part of CAAMFest 2016.

Thursday Nights are supported in part by The Hearst Foundations, Dodge & Cox, and The Joseph & Mercedes McMicking Foundation.
