Artist Nick Dong explores the patterns that come together to form
culture and create language to transmit ideas. Reflecting on the exhibition Emperors’
Treasures: Chinese Art from the National Palace Museum, Taipei, Dong creates an immersive, interactive installation of a “circular
sky” and a “square earth," invoking ancient Chinese iconography of heaven
and earth. Dong explores this cosmological pattern, recognizing the rich and
wondrous culture in the exhibition and its place in the modern world.
About the Artist
Dong, a conceptual metalsmith and mixed-media sculptor, creates works with the
intention of igniting an experience. The Taiwanese American artist employs a multidisciplinary array
of techniques and materials in his mission to develop an experiential and even
spiritual bond with his audience. In 2012, Dong’s installation En-Lightening was included in the
Smithsonian American Art Museum’s 40
under 40: Craft Futures.
