In celebration of Lords of the Samurai, which includes several famous tea wares, the Future Grand Master (Wakasosho) of the Mushakoji Senke tradition presents a series of tea gatherings using specially designed furniture. Sen So-oku (born 1975) teaches art history at Meiji Gakuin University and this year is a visiting scholar at Columbia University. He is the eldest son in the Mushakoji Senke family, one of three families directly descended from Sen Rikyu (1522–1591), Japan’s seminal tea master credited with establishing the Way of Tea as it is practiced today. As a 15th generation descendant of Rikyu, Sen is one of only a handful of individuals who may be correctly addressed as a “tea master.” Sen was named a Special Advisor for Cultural Exchange by the Japanese government Agency of Cultural Affairs, and has spent the past year traveling around the US and Europe presenting programs about Japanese culture and art. He will present narrated tea gatherings in this rare San Francisco appearance.
Co-sponsored with the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco.
