Rocks into Gold
Zhan Wang: Sculptures from the Sierra
By Jeff Kelley
$24.95 (softcover)
Documenting the exhibition On Gold Mountain: Sculptures from the Sierra by Zhan Wang, this catalogue includes essays by exhibition curator Jeff Kelley and contemporary Chinese art authority Britta Erickson. Kelley explains how the artist obtained rocks from mining sites once worked by Chinese laborers in the Sierra Nevada and then created manufactured versions of the rocks out of stainless steel, and how he created a landscape representing the city of San Francisco out of pots and pans. Together these two thrusts of this installation at the Asian Art Museum by one of China's leading contemporary artists speak to the Chinese immigrant experience in California. Erickson complements Kelley's essay with a thorough and engaging account of the artist's body of work leading up to the installation.
