APA Heritage Month Target Sunday 2011

Enjoy FREE general admission to the museum all day, where there'll be fun activities for all ages. Create an artwork inspired by the special exhibition Bali: Art, Ritual, Performance*, watch music performances by Gamelan X and Gamelan Kori Mas, listen to storytellers in the galleries, and stretch out with yoga. Special guest Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi will be reading from and signing her new book Dream Big, Little Pig. A limited number of copies of her book will also be given away to kids, courtesy of Target.

*Please note that a $5 surcharge applies to the Bali exhibition for visitors over 17.

Gamelan X world music ensemble presents dynamic, original music on the front steps of the museum. Drawing musical inspiration from Indonesian, Balkan, African, Indian and American traditions, Gamelan X combines complex interlocking rhythms and melodies into a visceral experience that excites and entrances its listeners.

Listen to the shimmering sounds of Balinese gamelan music played by Gamelan Kori Mas. Balinese musical emsembles are called gamelan, which is the Indonesian word for orchestra or ensemble. The word gamelan does not refer to any specific instrument, but to the collection of instruments as as whole.

ART ACTIVITY

 

Create an original artwork inspired by objects in the Bali: Art, Ritual, Performance exhibition.

STORYTELLING

The museum’s storytellers bring the galleries to life telling tales from Asia’s most beloved myths and folktales. From “Gecko’s Complaint” and “How Ganesha Got His Elephant Head” to the “Inch High Samurai”, visitors of all ages can delight in the richness and wonder of these classic stories celebrating storytelling traditions throughout Asia.

YOGA

Get centered with Yoga Flow. Learn basic poses for balance, flexibility and strength as you move your body into positions inspired by sculptures in the museum collection. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.

BOOK READING & SIGNING

Author and Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi will read and sign copies of her new book, Dream Big, Little Pig.
